Compound Semiconductor

With a growing demand for compound semiconductor wafer substrates that are used in the fabrication of GaN-related devices, both optoelectronic and electronic, substrates such as Sapphire, SiC, GaN, GaAs and others, have increased in demand in alarming rates.

The consumer market for computers, netbooks, notebooks, mobile devices, TVs, automobiles and other electronic gadgets have all created a need for high efficiency, high capacity, high intensity and high yielding end products (LED, laser diodes and power devices).  It goes without saying that substrate quality, cost, and availability can not be overestimated in the quest for affordable, available LED and devices.

Saint-Gobain Ceramic Materials' Specialty Abrasives group provides many different types of semiconductor substrates, as both elemental and compound substrates.  Some of these more commonly known substrates are shown below.

Group IV elemental semiconductors
  • Diamond (C)
  • Silicon (Si)
  • Germanium (GE)
Group IV compound semiconductors
  • Silicon carbide (SiC)
III-V semiconductors
  • Gallium arsenide (GaAs)
  • Gallium nitride (GaN)
  • Indium phosphide (InP)
II-VI semiconductors
  • Zinc oxide (ZnO)
  • Zinc selenide (ZnSe)
  • Zinc sulfide (ZnS)
  • Zinc telluride (ZnTe)
Other oxides
  • Sapphire - all planes

All semiconductor substrates will require some form of machining, sawing, grinding, lapping and polishing to prepare the surfaces of these wafers for required deposition of devices and electronics.  Saint-Gobain Ceramic Materials offers a wide range of vehicles, coolants, slurries, and cleaners carefully tested and optimized to be compatible with many of the compound semiconductor substrates.  Our engineers are available for consultation to provide technical assistance by recommending not only the products, but also the processing conditions to help guide our customers to experience the results we achieve in our applications lab.
